California currently has a minimum wage of $13 per hour for employers with 25 or fewer employees and $14 for employers with 26 or more employees. On January 1, 2022, the minimum wage will increase by $1 per hour across the state, and all companies should be prepared for that to happen. Before that, however, different localities throughout the state increased their own minimum wages on July 1, 2021. 


If your wages were supposed to increase on July 1 and your employer did not comply, you should immediately contact a California minimum wage attorney for assistance.

Below is a list of the current minimum wage standards for localities that stray from the state guidelines for most employers:


  • Alameda = $15 per hour
  • Belmont = $15.90 per hour
  • Berkeley = $16.32 per hour
  • Burlingame = $15 per hour
  • Cupertino = $15.65 per hour
  • Daly City = $15 per hour
  • East Palo Alto = $15 per hour
  • El Cerrito = $15.61 per hour
  • Emeryville = $17.13 per hour
  • Fremont = $15.25 per hour
  • Half Moon Bay = $15 per hour
  • Hayward = $15 per hour
  • Los Altos = $15.65 per hour
  • Los Angeles = $15 per hour
  • Malibu = $15 per hour
  • Menlo Park = $15.25 per hour
  • Milpitas = $15.65 per hour
  • Mountain View = $16.30 per hour
  • Novato = $15 per hour ($15.24 for over 100 employees)
  • Oakland = $14.36 per hour
  • Palo Alto = $15.65 per hour
  • Pasadena = $15 per hour
  • Petaluma = $15.20 per hour
  • Redwood City = $15.62 per hour
  • Richmond = $15.21 per hour
  • San Carlos = $15.24 per hour
  • San Francisco = $16.32 per hour
  • South San Francisco = $15.25 per hour
  • San Jose = $15.45 per hour
  • San Leandro = $15 per hour
  • San Mateo = $15.62 per hour
  • Santa Clara = $15.65 per hour
  • Santa Monica = $15 per hour
  • Santa Rosa = $15.20 per hour
  • Sonoma = $15 per hour
  • Sunnyvale = $16.30 per hour


Some of these localities might have lower minimum wages for companies with 25 or fewer employees, including $14 in Sonoma, $15 in Petaluma, $14 in Novato, $14 in Hayward, and $15 in Fremont.


No matter where you live in California, it is important to know whether your locality goes along with the statewide minimum wage or has its own. Then, you should stay aware of when the minimum wage might increase, which might be on January 1 or July 1 or each year.
